THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A SINGLE WORD

Hmm? Hmm! Hmm… This exclamation can mean so many different things with the only variable being the tone in which it is pronounced. Hmm is not a word but just a noise we make when thinking, or shocked, or puzzled or even in agreement. The sound is also multilingual, no matter where you are in the world it can be used in the same way. If these three letters can mean so much, just imagine how significant an actual word can be.

WHY CONDUCT?

How we conduct ourselves is not the only way we can view the word. When a person conducts they are leading. When you are leading you are setting an example, sticking to morals, being fair and just but at the same time a figure of authority. We conduct situations because we have a sense of responsibility. You will find that nine times out of ten an individual will thrive and grow in this roll.

WHAT LAW IS ON THE WALL?

The legal context in this act highlights that it in-fact illegal to conspire and plan to commit a crime with the intent to achieve the goal that is set.

Criminal Law Act 1977. 1 (1) If a person agrees with any other person or persons that a course of conduct shall be pursued which, if the agreement is carried out in accordance with their intentions, either will necessarily amount to or involve the commission of any offence or offences by one or more of the parties to the agreement, or would do so but for the existence of facts which render the commission of the offence or any of the offences impossible, he is guilty of conspiracy to commit the offence or offences in question.

THE PEAKY BLINDERS

The hit BBC show Peaky Blinders depicts the organised crime group of the same name fighting for control after the end of World War One. Despite the programme’s phenomenal story line, acting and display of an early 20th Century Birmingham, the real truth of the Peaky Blinders is quite different. The real gang was around in the 1890s and consisted mostly of young men, some as young as 12 years of age. They were soulfully a street gang associated with violence and robberies and nowhere near as established as the Shelby family. The infamous razor blade sewn into the peaks of their flatcars is also suspected to be a myth. Razor blades were only just starting to be used at this time meaning that they were too expensive for the gang to get their hands on. It is more than likely that they got the name Peaky Blinders, due to the peaks on their caps, combined with the term blinder, which meant to be dressed impeccably.

Justice in the life and conduct of the State is possible only as first it resides in the hearts and souls of the citizens.

CAMORRA

When discussing organised crime groups, and especially the mafia, Camorra must be addressed. Camorra is one of the oldest and largest Mafia-type criminal organisation in Italy. Originating in Campania, Camorra dates back as early as the 17th Century, where they were mainly running gambling houses in Naples. Originally the low Camorra was poor plebs that were being controlled by the Mafia, they were encouraged to commit crime to pay money to the organised group. Eventually a high Camorra was formed from evil and cunning members of the middle class. It was with the high Camorra that the mafia managed to solidify itself. These middle class members would be influential in trade deals and politics. Despite multiple trials and much reorganising of the gang over the centuries it still remains strong and incredibly influential in the criminal world.

THE ILLUMINATI

The Illuminati was a secret society originating in Bavaria, now Germany. Adam Weishaupt became the only non-clerical professor at an institution ran by Jesuits in 1773. After years of discrimination from the clerics, he decided to spread ideas of the Enlightenment through a secret society. Averse to Freemasonry he decide to start his own, the Illuminati. After years of attempting to expand, in 1785 all secret societies were banned in Bavaria and saw the decline of the Illuminati. However many conspiracy theorists believe that the organisation have survived till today. They theorise that they are in control of major world events and have ultimate control over the entertainment industry. Many theorists highlight the all seeing eye in popular culture as a sign of this.

I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.
— Leonardo Da Vinci

WHY IS CONDUCT IMPORTANT IN 2021 AN BEYOND?

Everyone lives by their own code of conduct. We all have set values and attributes that we live by and expect others to respect. By having a clear understanding and acceptance of the morals of society, we allow ourselves to be open to those around us. 2021 has seen more need for acceptance than any year, minority groups are finally starting to be embraced by a larger community. It is crucial that we know how to conduct ourselves to embolden a revived sense of community.

CONDUCT MATTERS

The ability to have different types of conduct in any situation. Our conduct is what makes each person individual. How a person behaves or reacts to a certain moment in time highlights the diversity in everyone. Whether you find anger or tolerance, happiness or sadness the way we behave is what makes us who we are and that is something we must celebrate.

CONDUCTORS

The first example of a conductor is a person who is entrusted with organising something that consists of many elements. The most well known version of a conductor is those who conduct an orchestra. A conductor is crucial to keeping the large band in sync with each other so they can create the grandiose sound required. With the baton, the conductor stands facing the orchestra and keeps the tempo almost like a human metronome. They will also indicate cues for different sections to begin or finish playing, as well as volume in which each part plays. Truly the heart pulsing through the orchestra.

CONDUCTORS IN SCIENCE

A conductor when it comes to science is a substance that allows electrical charge carriers, usually electrons, to move from atom to atom. Conductors can be used to transfer electricity, heat and sound. Pure elemental silver is the most effective conductor however is not one of the most commonly used for wiring. This is due to the fact that it begins to corrode with usage, not only is this a safety hazard but it makes the transfer of electricity patchy and unreliable. Copper is used much more often as it is very pliable and is much more durable than silver.

A reputation for a thousand years may depend upon the conduct of a single moment.
— Ernest Bramah

ORGANISED CRIME GROUPS

The conspiracy to commit a crime is very prevalent when it comes to organised crime groups. More commonly known as gangs or mafias their aim is usually to earn money, fear and hold dominion over a certain geographical area and be the kingpins of a certain illegal activity. The achieve this goal by any means necessary, members of these groups are usually considered to be ruthless and only loyal to the leaders of the gang.

Omertà

Omertà is the code of silence and honour in the Italian Mafia. It highlights the importance in the group to not confide with anyone outside the gang and to stay silent when being questioned by any establishment about their group. Omertà is sacred to the Italian Mafia and highlights that no one in the gang should seek legal aid for any personal grievances, they believe it should all be dealt with in house. In some cases, those who break Omertà have been punished by a gruesome death.
